Digital Musical Instruments
Traditional musical instruments are designed around a means of making a sound, like a vibrating string, for example. This, in turn, imposes a particular interaction method for the instrument, which constrains expressibility. The rules are completely different when one uses a digital device to generate the sound; now, we can decide how to control the sound, rather than the sound deciding how we control it.
At the HCI Lab, we're particularly interested in exploring how digital musical instruments (DMIs) can be used to foster collaboration. To do so, we're building a DMI on the tabletop.
