Improved Cascading Menus
This project is about designing a new and efficient technique for linear cascading pull down menus. Cascading pull down menus are the most commonly used type of menus in today's GUI (Graphical User Interfaces). However, they have their limitations and problems. Namely, time delay as well as movement and selection errors. The new technique is called "AAMUs" or adaptive activation area menus and is specifically designed to eliminate time delay and make the movement and selection process easier and less error prone.
AAMUs provide users a broad triangle shape activation area which makes the process of menu navigation and item selection faster, easier and reduce the number of errors over all.
AAMUs are found to be better than traditional cascading pull down menus while using a mouse. We are further investigating the performance benefits using other devices like touch pad and pen as well as various tasks. This technique can be extended to other interface like web menus/ widgets and hand held devices etc.
